Google LSA now charges for missed calls: what changed

Since October 1, 2026, Google can charge for an unanswered Local Services Ads call. The 20-second rule, what it costs a trades business, and what to do.

Since October 1, 2026, Google Local Services Ads can charge you for a call your team did not answer. If a customer calls during your business hours and stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, Google treats the missed call as a valid lead. For a plumbing or HVAC company that pays $50 or more per lead, an unanswered call from the ad can now cost money as well as the job.

This guide covers the rule as Google states it, what it costs at trade-level prices, how to check your own exposure, and what an AI receptionist can and cannot change.

What Google changed

Google announced the update to advertisers in August 2026, effective October 1, 2026 (Search Engine Roundtable). Google's help page on how leads work now lists a missed call as a valid lead when you missed the call during your business hours and the customer stayed on the line for more than 20 seconds.

The details that matter for a small trades business:

Situation Charged?
Missed call during business hours, caller on the line more than 20 seconds Yes
Missed call, caller hangs up within 20 seconds No
Call goes to voicemail or a greeting during business hours, caller stays more than 20 seconds Yes, Google treats it as a connected call, whether or not they leave a message
Call passes through a phone menu The 20-second timer starts when the caller presses a key
Call outside your ad schedule or Google Business Profile hours No
Same number calls again within 15 days Charged once
Answered call Normal valid-lead rules apply

Google's page does not limit the rule to particular countries or trades, and it says nothing about call forwarding or answering services. If a lead looks wrong, you can still flag it in that lead's feedback survey in your Local Services Ads account, and Google may credit leads it judges invalid.

What a missed call now costs

SearchLight Digital's February 2026 data across 888 contractors put the average Local Services Ads cost per lead at $51 for HVAC, $57 for plumbing, $59 for drain and sewer and $39 for electrical (SearchLight Digital). The same source reports about $30 in small markets and $90 or more in competitive metros, so check your own dashboard.

The ad spend is the smaller part. CallRail's 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers found that 78% have abandoned a business after an unanswered call, and 21% call another business straight away (CallRail). CallRail's platform data shows 28% of inbound calls go unanswered on average (CallRail).

A worked example: a plumbing company gets 20 Local Services Ads calls a week and misses 5 of them while the crew is on jobs. At $57 per lead, that is up to about $1,235 a month in charges for calls nobody spoke to. If half of those callers would have booked a $400 job, another $4,300 a month walks to a competitor. Put your own numbers into the missed call cost calculator.

How to check your exposure

  1. Open the leads list in your Local Services Ads account and filter for the weeks since October 1.
  2. Count the missed calls that were charged, and note the time of day each one came in.
  3. Compare your ad schedule with your Google Business Profile hours. Charges apply only inside both, so a schedule that runs while nobody can pick up costs you the most.
  4. Check what callers hear when nobody answers. A voicemail greeting no longer avoids the charge.
  5. Dispute leads that are spam or outside your service area through the feedback survey.

What you can change

Google's rule does not care why a call was missed. Three levers remain.

Tighten the ad schedule. If your team cannot answer on Saturday afternoons, pausing the ads then avoids paying for calls you will miss. The trade-off is fewer leads.

Answer more calls. A call someone answers is still a charged lead under the normal rules, but it is a conversation with a customer. An AI receptionist can answer the calls that reach it at any hour, ask your intake questions and book eligible jobs into your calendar.

Call missed callers back. With Voxipo, you keep your business number and your carrier forwards unanswered calls to Voxipo. Voxipo then calls the customer back from your SMS-verified business number after a delay you set, 30 seconds by default, during the federal calling window of 8am to 9pm in the caller's time. The agent collects the job details and can book the visit.

Be clear on what this does. A forwarded missed call may already have been charged by Google, and we have not tested how Google bills calls that a carrier forwards. Voxipo does not stop Local Services Ads charges. It gives you a second chance at a lead you may have paid for. A caller who hangs up before your carrier forwards the call never reaches Voxipo, and a callback can be delayed or missed when call capacity is full.

What stays with your team

The agent records what the caller reports. Your team decides whether to send someone tonight, what the job costs and whether the problem is safe to leave. Live transfer to a person is not available yet, so urgent requests are saved in the call record with the recording, transcript and callback number for your staff.
